Deacons are coming to Rome on a jubilee pilgrimage from more than a hundred countries, including the United States, France, Brazil, India, Cameroon, and Australia. Unfortunately, Pope Francis will not be present; he was hospitalized at the Gemelli hospital in Rome last week.
The event began on Friday, February 21, with a prayer in 12 Roman churches, followed by a series of meetings on the theme "Concrete Signs of Hope in Diaconal Service."
On Saturday morning, participants will have the opportunity to pass through the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, which is one of the conditions for receiving plenary indulgences granted in the jubilee year. From 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, a conference on the role of deacons in the synodal church will be held at the Auditorium on Via della Conciliazione. The day will conclude with a prayer vigil in the Vatican Paul VI Hall.
On the final day, Sunday, February 23, 23 deacons will be ordained during the holy mass at St. Peter's Basilica. The service will be presided over by the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Archbishop Rino Fisichella.
